Addressing the Literacy Crisis in Indiana County

The need for intensive reading intervention has never been greater

45%
of elementary students reading below grade level
55%
of PA third graders meet reading proficiency (down from 62% in 2019)
4x
more likely to drop out if not proficient by 3rd grade
2
grade levels improvement in 12-20 weeks with intervention

Contributing Challenges

Multiple factors have created a perfect storm for literacy struggles

📚

Pandemic Learning Gaps

Remote instruction delayed foundational reading for K-3 students

ðŸ‘Ļ‍ðŸŦ

Limited Specialist Access

Rural districts face shortages of reading specialists and intervention teachers

💰

Economic Barriers

Reduced access to books, early literacy activities, and private tutoring

📅

Chronic Absenteeism

Compounds reading delays for already struggling students

âœĻ

Evidence-Based Solutions Work

Structured reading interventions can close achievement gaps by up to 2 grade levels in just 12-20 weeks of consistent instruction

Yet access to such interventions is limited, and many families cannot afford private tutoring

Bridging the Gap

Roots & Wings Learning Center was founded to address this critical need — empowering children, families, and educators to create a stronger, more literate community for the future of Indiana County.
